How racism impacts everyone

I recently listened to the following TedTalk and found it really eye-opening.  Heather McGhee is an economic policy expert who explores how racism impacts everyone.

Heather McGhee is also on this week’s Armchair Expert podcast if you’re looking for more detail on her perspective:

Say my name

I hope this note finds you all healthy and safe.  It’s a pretty scary time, and I know everyone handles stress, emotion, and turmoil differently.

I’m personally horrified and heartbroken by the death of George Floyd.  Minneapolis is my home, and I hate to see the city on fire.  I’m also incredibly proud of all the beautiful people that are peacefully protesting, challenging the status quo, cleaning up the destruction, and providing essential services to the communities in need.

We can’t avoid discussions on race and intolerance just because it can be uncomfortable.  Nothing will change if we take that approach.  As you know, I have 3 black boys – the oldest of which is watching the news with us and asking a lot of questions.  I can’t pretend I have the right answers for him or that I can truly understand being a POC in this country.  But, I know pulling everyone (including him) into the conversation is extremely important.

I made a commitment to share race – related content with my team at work, and the result is a long string of emails leading to the origin of this blog. The sole point of the blog is to put out my personal commentary on what’s happening in the world and share content I like to consume. We’re all a work in progress, and I hope that by airing my own vulnerabilities, I can encourage others to search for their own blind spots.
